Rarely do movie sequels live up to or exceed expectations of its predecessors; however, Transformers 2 breaks that mold and set a higher bar for this franchise. From start to finish, this movie was action packed, entertaining, and didn't make you feel like you were in the theatre for nearly two and a half hours. The special effects were amazing and the new vehicles and robots were just as impressive. Also, this movie manages to incorporate and establish more personalities and emotions displayed by the alien autobots and decepticons. Transformers 2 contained a good blend between action and comedy with just enough drama that didn't slow down the movie too much. As a fan of the originial cartoon, I enjoyed how the movie incorporates original characters from the cartoon and converted them into modern technology in a manner where you were still able to identify who they were.
Behind all the new robots, vehicles, explosions, and Megan Fox scenes, a plot does exist for the movie. I'm not one to give spoilers so I'll just give a brief synopsis. The story continues a short time after the first movie left off. The Autobots are off hunting down the rest of the Decepticons while Sam (Shia Lebeouf) is going way to college in hopes of starting a normal life; however, before Sam embarks on his trip he finds a shard from the all spark which embeds information into his brain. The Decepticons discover he now has this valuable information in him and stop at nothing to obtain it from him. This leads to an all out war between the Autobots and Decepticons that culminates in the Middle East of all places.
After watching this movie, I find it hard to believe the critics hated it so much. What were their criteria for reviewing this movie? The story and plot were straight and to the point, well-delivered, and every scene fit in. Obviously, this movie wouldn't win an award for Best Picture/Actor/Actress but it wasn't intended for any of that. If the intent of the movie was to entertain fans of the original cartoon, while attracting new fans, and leaving them wantiing more...then I say it succeeded. I definitely can't wait for Transformers 3 to come out and see what more special effects, robots, cars, and action they can come up with.
