As Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen before it, this movie had received lackluster reviews and negative criticism. But just like Transformers 2, this movie rocked! From beginning to end, this movie was packed with nonstop action and excitement. If you were a fan of the cartoon, you'd recognize the subtle references that pay homage to the popular 80's cartoon. From the outfits to the sound effects, you knew the writers and director were trying to bring the cartoon characters to life as much as possible.
The major knock on this film, and I agree, is that they turned G.I. Joe into a secretly assembled international team instead of the All-American fighters. However, the movie does a good job of making it work and putting everything in motion. The storyline is a typical G.I. Joe storyline as the Joes try to prevent enemy forces, soon to be known as "Cobra," from obtaining a new weapon technology and controlling the world. The movie also re-introduces a lot of the cartoon characters, telling their story and how they're connected to other characters, through flashbacks. These flashbacks may or may not be annoying to movie-goers but is understandable as there are many characters and sub-plots to introduce but the flashbacks were necessary and fit into the movie well.
If anything, the most entertaining aspect of the movie was anytime Snake Eyes (played by Ray Park, better known as Darth Maul from Star Wars: The Phantom Menace or Toad from the first X-Men movie) was on the screen. His fight scenes, with Storm Shadow in particular, brought the characters to life and made for some memorable fight scenes. There were even some cameo appearances by other characters which will hopefully play bigger roles in the sequel (yes, there is a green light to make a second one). All in all, this was a good film to introduce the characters and set up for an even better sequel.
