This is probably my all time favorite movie and actually has developed somewhat of a cult following. There have been rumors of a remake with Samuel L. Jackson playing the role of Sho'nuff, but anything would be a disgrace to the original. Just let it be.
I have always been a big action/martial arts movie buff and really appreciate this movie even though it might seem more of a comedy by most critics. Sure, you might think it's just another cheesy 80s movie with corny lines, big hair and goofy outfits...well that was the 1980s for the most part. I was only a kid during that time frame, but the music, movies, television...all that has always appealed to me so be forewarned that my rating will be a little biased.
So this movie takes place in New York...basically in and around Harlem. 'Bruce' Leroy Green (Taimak) is the main character who's pretty much a humble and fairly shy guy with exceptional kung-fu/martial arts abilities. Leroy is a true martial artist in the fact that he wouldn't use his art for evil and wants to use his abilities for the greater good. The true 'good guy.' At the beginning of the film, Leroy is actually sent on a journey by his master to find thee one and only 'master' who would lead him to the 'glow.' You see the 'glow' is the physical state a fighter reaches where he is basically at the highest possible skill level and is pretty much invincible during that time.
His parents actually run a pizzeria in Harlem—remember this phrase “Just directa' your feetsa' to Daddy Green's pizza.” He's got a younger brother Richie who constantly picks on him for his strange martial arts beliefs/ways and has a crush on the same girl Laura Charles (80s beauty Vanity)
Laura Charles hosts a dance show called 7th Heaven (so this is where the long running TV show stole er got its name) She gets into a run-in with a video productions junkie by the name of Eddie Arkadian who harasses her to play his girlfriend's ridiculous music video on her dance show.
'Bruce' Leroy's nemesis is Sho'Nuff (played by the late Julius Carry), the self-proclaimed Shogun of Harlem who constantly challenges Leroy to a fight throughout the movie to prove he is the best fighter in Harlem and deserves the title of master. He runs around Harlem with his cronies and terrorizes everyone in his path to convince Leroy to fight him.
After many refusals to fight Sho'Nuff, it isn't until Eddie Arkadian kidnaps Leroy's brother Richie and Laura Charles that provokes Leroy to get his fight game on. Arkadian basically brings all the toughest, baddest thugs of Harlem to the 7th Heaven studio to entrap Leroy. This is set up in a gauntlet of sorts that would set up a final, most exciting fight with Sho'Nuff in the end.
You have got to check this flick out if you haven't already. To entice you more, I've left a clip of the movie below. Like I said, it's a cult classic and I think it's awesome. If you like 1980s films, 1980s music and breakdancing, martial arts, and a little humor thrown in, you will love this movie. I told you I would be biased for the rating, but it is a must see. Relive the 80s man!
