I was actually surprised by how decent this movie really was. I won’t say it was great but it had its moments and did contain some suspenseful situations that were of value.
Now Shia LaBeouf was coming off the release of the megahit movie Transformers that same summer so this movie kind of got lost in the shuffle.
Providing a solid review for this movie would be a little difficult without giving away too much detail where it would be a spoiler. I’ll keep it brief.
The movie opens up with Shia LaBeouf’s character Kale and his dad on a father and son fishing trip. On the drive home, it looked like something was about to go down considering how the camera was focusing too intensely on Kale when he was driving. He kept taking his eyes off the road while on the phone and joking with his dad so it was obvious they were probably going to get into a car accident. I just didn’t think it was going to be this brutal. An SUV speeds up from behind and swerves in front of them and then seconds later swerves to the left to avoid a broken down car. Kale didn’t see the parked car since he was looking at his father, and they hit it head on causing the car to flip. Both seem okay for the moment...then another car comes out of nowhere and rams the passenger side where Kale’s father was fully exposed. Needless to say, he didn’t make it.
The movie forwards to a year later towards the end of the school year. Kale is in his Spanish class and his teacher confronts him about not doing his homework and makes a comment about how his father would be disappointed in him. Kale clocks him and gets a reduced sentence of 3 months house arrest.
He’s all alone in the house during the summer with nothing to do and nowhere to go. His mother cancels his Xbox subscription and cuts his TV cable. The boy gets curious and takes notice to his neighbours and breaks out the binoculars for closer looks. Peeping Tom?...it’s on the border. He’s got a hot neighbour chick that just moved in as he was getting used to be on lockdown at home. Ashley’s got a rebellious side to her and befriends Kale almost right away. Together with Kale’s friend Ronnie, they scope out the other neighbours only to find out something suspicious about one particular neighbour. It’s a little creepy and unusual and additional investigating is required to be sure.
This is where it gets interesting and suspenseful. Will they get caught snooping around and could it cost them their life? You gotta check it out. Solid rental, but I think it’s been on cable television by now. (TNT recently played it)
Sponge Rating: 5.5/10 sponges
Potential Spoiler alert
**I would have given a higher rating but some things were a little unrealistic. A character gets hit in the face with a baseball bat and gets up minutes later with only a simple bruise.
Unrealistic when a killer knocks out one victim, ties her up, and puts her underground all within a few minutes...then enters the neighbor’s house without skipping a beat and whacks a dude in the face with the bat. There is no way he had enough time to do all of that in that short time frame.
Some of the decapitated heads obviously looked fake...anyways, just go watch it!
