Peyton Manning wins the 2009 NFL MVP award…his second consecutive…his 4th total. Was it unanimous from a fan’s perspective? Take a look at his performance from the 2009 regular season which aren’t far from typical Peyton stats. Remember the Colts were 14-0 at one point and it’s always been on Peyton’s shoulders to determine the outcome of the game. The defense is an average one and the running game is mediocre at best.

Rating 99.9

Passing yards 4500
Who else was deserving or could have edged him out? Here’s my list of could haves:
Drew Brees—led his team to a 13-3 record, a NFC South Division title, and home field advantage throughout the playoffs. The Saints are always in the game if Brees is behind center, and it’s obvious during those many comebacks he orchestrated this season.
Stats:
Rating 109.6
Completion% 70.6
TD/INT Ratio 34-11
Passing yards 4388
Brett Favre—led the Vikings to a 12-4 record, NFC North Division title, and a 1st round bye. Sure, the Vikes’ defense and Adrian Peterson’s stellar running game is what has made this team a Wild Card contender in years past, but Favre’s heroics and vision is what has put this team over the hump into Super Bowl talks. Did you see that game winning TD pass in the 49ers game? Enough said.

Completion% 68.4
TD/INT Ratio 33-7
Passing yards 4202
Matt Schaub—the Texans are an underachieving team that’s for sure. After a breakthrough rookie campaign last year, big things were expected from Steve Slaton to add to the Texans’ explosive passing offense. That didn’t happen. The Texans’ defense has all the right tools but couldn’t stay consistent all year. Schaub turned into a gunslinger and brought excitement to their offense and kept them in a lot of games. Although the Texans didn’t make the playoffs again, they finally get a winning record at 9-7 and was actually in a spot to get a Wildcard bid with some help. Check out his amazing stats:

Rating 98.6
Completion% 67.9
TD/INT Ratio 29-15
Passing yards 4770
So obviously, the 2009 NFL year was the year of the quarterbacks. Some would say that Tennessee’s running back Chris Johnson was deserving of votes…my question WHY? Okay, Johnson rushed for over 2,000 yards and had 14TDs which are both incredible feats in themselves. Again, how valuable is he really to his team?
First, he seemed to me to be one of the most selfish players in this league and I definitely don’t think it’s good for the Titans or the NFL. I saw something like this coming when he dismissed the title of ‘Smash and Dash’ LenDale White gave to the running back tandem. So this dude wanted to be more of an individual and not work as a team after the whole team went a surprising 13-3. Then they start the season 0-6 even though Chris Johnson puts up big rushing numbers. Then Vince Young comes in for Kerry Collins, and they finish the season at 8-8. Was Chris Johnson that much of a factor for the team finishing the season 6-2? Sure, but as much as Vince Young was? I think not.
Thoughts?
